N J. Cohen

N. JEROLD COHEN N. Jerold Cohen is a partner in the law firm of Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP, Atlanta, Washington, D.C. and New York. He was appointed by President Carter to serve as Chief Counsel for the Internal Revenue Service in November 1979 and served through January 1981. He was presented the Commissioner's Award for outstanding service to the Internal Revenue Service and the General Counsel of the Treasury's Award for outstanding service to the Treasury Department. He is a past Chair of the Tax Section of the American Bar Association, a past Chair of the Internal Revenue Service Advisory Council, and presently serves as Chair of the American College of Tax Counsel. Mr. Cohen was graduated from Tulane University in 1957, where he was elected to Beta Gamma Sigma, Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, and numerous other honoraries. He was graduated from Harvard Law School magna cum laude in 1961, where he served as Book Review Editor of the Harvard Law Review. He is a member of the Board of Advisors of the Virginia Tax Review and is a past member of the Little Brown and Commerce Clearing House Tax Advisory Boards. He served as a member of the Board of Advisors of the Internal Revenue Service's Continuing Professional Education Program and as a member of the Advisory Group to the Staff of the Senate Finance Committee on its Subchapter C Revision Act. Mr. Cohen is a member of the American Law Institute, has been an advisor to its Subchapter C Project and a consultant to its Tax Integration Project, and is presently serving as one of the five members of the Institute's Tax Program Committee. His past appointments include Vice Chair and Member of Council, Section of Taxation, American Bar Association (1988-1993); Chair, Formation of Tax Policy Committee, Section of Taxation, American Bar Association (1982-1986); Chair, Taxation Committee, Section of Litigation, American Bar Association (1981-1983); Chair, Corporate Committee, Section of Taxation, American Bar Association (1977-1979); Vice Chair, Tax Shelter Committee, Section of Taxation, American Bar Association (1981-1982); Vice Chair, Committee on Taxation, Section of Individual Rights and Human Responsibilities, American Bar Association (1976-1979); Adjunct Professor of Law, Emory University (1967-1976). Mr. Cohen has been nominated by his peers for inclusion in several publications, which include Guide to the World's Leading Tax Advisers, An International Who's Who of Corporate Tax Lawyers, International Tax Review's Survey of North America's Top Tax Advisers, The National Law Journal's List of Top Corporate Tax Lawyers, The Best Lawyers in America and Marquis Who's Who in America.
