Brian Leary
Brian Leary is Vice President of Design & Development for Atlantic Station, LLC - the joint-venture partnership redeveloping the historic Atlantic Steel property in Midtown, Atlanta. Since joining the project in 1997 he has developed the master plan into a National model for Smart Growth and new urbanism. Brian successfully negotiated with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for Atlantic Station and the new 17~ Street multi-modal bridge to become the first ProjectXL and transportation control measure of its kind in the United States. Prior to, joining the Atlantic Steel team, Brian worked for Central Atlanta Progress (CAP). With CAP and COPA, Inc., the non-profit development arm for the Centennial Olympic Park area, Brian helped with the implementation of the Westside Tax Allocation District (TAD), Centennial Park area special public interest (SPI) overlay zoning district and expansion of the Downtown Improvement District (DID). Brian is a graduate of Georgia Tech's College of Architecture with an undergraduate degree in architecture and a master's degree in City Planning. While focusing on transportation and land development in graduate school, Brian worked with Catherine Ross, Ph.D. (now Executive Director of the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority) and her consulting firm. Before graduating, he finished his thesis outlining a redevelopment plan for the Atlantic Steel property that would provide a national model for Smart Growth and Brownfield remediation through the creation of a 24-hour, live-work-play community. With his experience in Smart Growth, Brian has spoken to groups across the United States outlining not only the consequences of sprawl and its inefficient use of resources, but also how we can continue to grow through sustainable development practices. He has presented to the Congress for New Urbanism, National Partners for Smart Growth, Real Estate Roundtable, Urban Land Institute, and the President's National Town Meeting on Sustainability. In April of 1999, his article, "Steel Away" which outlined the past, present & future of the Atlantic Steel property was published in Urban Land magazine. Among many non-work commitments, Brian is a member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI), Congress for New Urbanism, International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) and the American Institute of Architects. Brian is an alumni advisor to Georgia Tech and sits on the AIA Urban Design Committee, the Inner City, Environmental and Brownfield Committees of ULI's Atlanta District and the Midtown Alliance Transportation Committee. Brian and his wife Heather live in Midtown, Atlanta where they enjoy walking t9 work, dinner and the park.
