The much-anticipated official announcement from the Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has finally arrived via social media. Today, March 20, 2020, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced that Tax Day will be delayed from April 15 to July 15. He made the announcement on Twitter, days after announcing a deferral on tax payments.

At @realDonaldTrump’s direction, we are moving Tax Day from April 15 to July 15. All taxpayers and businesses will have this additional time to file and make payments without interest or penalties.” Steven Mnuchin

In terms of payment deadlines, IRS Notice 2020-17 provides guidance on the extended payment dates for taxes due April 15, 2020. Federal balances owed for 2019 plus the 1st quarter 2020 estimated tax payments are extended to July 15, 2020.

In the days since COVID-19 began, The Georgia Society of CPAs (GSCPA) has been working closely with both the IRS and Georgia Department of Revenue (GDOR) to ask that the  April 15 deadline be extended in order to provide relief for tax payers and tax practitioners affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

GSCPA has had numerous conversations with Senator Perdue’s office, Congressman Loudermilk’s office, the IRS, the Department of Treasury, and the GDOR, specifically Tax Commissioner, David Curry.

GSCPA will share the official IRS notice and guidance once it becomes available. Additionally, GSCPA is working on the potential for Georgia conformity with the GDOR and the Governor’s office as we speak and will report once we have official notice.

Please stay tuned to GSCPA’s social media channels for breaking news.
