Ricky B. Novak

Ricky B. Novak serves as the complex exchange specialist and in-house counsel for Real Estate Exchange Services, Inc. ("REES"), an Atlanta-area consulting firm specializing in facilitating tax-deferred like-kind exchanges under Internal Revenue Code Section 1031. Ricky has assisted his clients in structuring reverse exchanges, construction exchanges, construction leasehold exchanges, multi-asset exchanges, personal property exchanges, and other such complex 1031 transactions. Ricky has also spoken both locally and nationally on 1031 related topics, and his writings have been published in a varying array of periodicals. Real Estate Exchange Services has assisted its clients in structuring tax-deferred exchanges since 1992, and is the only such firm in the Atlanta area whose sole focus is Section 1031. REES is a member of the FEA, or Federation of Exchange Accommodators, the only nationally recognized trade organization for qualified intermediaries. REES's clients range from Fortune 1000 companies selling multi-million dollar assets, to individual tax payers selling small investment properties. Ricky obtained his undergraduate degree from The Georgia Institute of Technology, graduating magna cum laude while majoring in International Affairs, with Certificates in International Business Management and Spanish. He later graduated from Emory University's School of Law, with a concentration in tax, real estate, and international law. Ricky is credited with study at both the European Union and NATO in Brussels, Belgium, during his schooling at Georgia Tech. He has also attended the Jagiellonian University School of Law in Krakow, Poland, for the study of Eastern and Central European business and law. After graduation, Ricky joined Arthur Andersen's Atlanta International Tax practice, where he assisted multinational clients with corporate restructuring, mergers and acquisitions, and international tax strategy. He later joined Deloitte & Touche's Atlanta Real Estate Tax practice, where he furthered his tax knowledge structuring REITs, partnerships, and other such entities for major national and international real estate companies. Ricky currently lives in Cumming, Georgia, with his wife of over four years Lisa, and their toddler son, Aidan. In his spare time, Ricky enjoys real estate investing, golfing, deep sea fishing, reading motivational/inspirational books, and watching college athletics. He is an active member of the Real Estate and Tax sections of the State Bar of Georgia, is a member of the Board of Directors for the Atlanta Bar Association's Real Estate Section, is an affiliate member of the Atlanta Commercial Board of Realtors, and serves on the board of directors or board of advisors for several Atlanta-based real estate firms. Ricky is also a member of various community and volunteer organizations, including The Rotary Club of Lanier/Forsyth.
