IRS Continues Launch of Online Business Tools
- With record numbers of Americans e-filing their tax returns and recently announced e-filing options for corporations and tax exempt organizations, the IRS has launched a new online form that gives tax professionals a faster, easier method of applying to become an authorized e-filer. Tax professionals now have an online application form that cuts processing time and reduces errors associated with using the paper Form 8633, Application to Participate in IRS e-file. Once the application is approved by the IRS, tax professionals can e-file returns for their clients.
Charities May Not Engage in Political Campaign Activities - Charities should be careful that their efforts to educate voters comply with the Internal Revenue Code requirements concerning political campaign activities, the tax agency said today in a presidential election-year advisory. Organizations described in section 501(c)(3) of the Code that are exempt from federal income tax are prohibited from participating or intervening in any political campaign on behalf of, or in opposition to, any candidate for public office. Charities, educational institutions and religious organizations, including churches, are among those that are tax-exempt under this code section.
Identity Theft Scheme Involves Bogus Email - The U.S. Department of the Treasury and the IRS warned taxpayers of an email-based scheme that attempts to trick taxpayers into revealing personal information such as social security numbers, driver's license information, and bank and credit card numbers. In this ploy, unsuspecting consumers receive an email, claiming they are under investigation for tax fraud and are subject to prosecution.

"Selecting Software: Keep It Simple"
Connecticut Post (04/26/04); Wayne Bragg - Companies of all sizes are tempted to purchase new software by promises of significant returns or productivity gains, but experts recommend upgrades only if problems exist with the current application or the new application will help them achieve their business goals. Before rushing into a software purchase, a team of selected employees should identify the problem, take note of productivity losses or other indicators of poor performance, and detail the ways in which the new software will help.
