Richard Hartnig is a tax and business advisory expert with extensive experience spanning over 30 years. His history providing counsel in international taxation planning and strategy and tax controversy extends across multiple industries and includes experience from both the private sector and the government. This rare level of knowledge lends him a comprehensive understanding of taxation issues as they affect both individuals and businesses. Richard earned a B.S. at the University of North Carolina, a J.D. from Duke University School of Law and an LL.M. from Georgetown University Law Center and is a member of the Georgia bar. Richard advises multinational corporations of all sizes on the tax aspects of cross-border mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, reorganizations, financings, cash repatriations and intercompany transactions. He has also served as international tax counsel to numerous Fortune 1000 companies, including leaders in the insurance, energy, paper and mining sectors. In the process, he has counseled companies on tax-advantaged debt structurings in 20 different countries. He also works extensively with both U.S. private equity funds investing outside the country and with non-U.S. funds investing in the U.S. Before joining Schwartz International, Richard's professional positions included various roles with Sutherland Asbill & Brennan, Troutman Sanders, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Office of the Chief Counsel of the Internal Revenue Service in Washington, D.C. He also served on the board of directors of the Atlanta Chapter of the International Fiscal Association. Richard has been recognized in the 2010 The Legal 500 United States in the area of tax controversy and is a frequent speaker on international tax issues
