Marc A. Azar, CPA

As a partner in Smith & Howard's tax group, Marc heads the firm's nonprofit tax team and spends a significant portion of his time in the nonprofit arena on matters relating to technical requirements, tax issues and changing regulations facing public charities and other tax-exempt organizations. Marc is a sought-after speaker on the IRS Form 990 and other related nonprofit tax topics. His speaking engagements include: • American Association of Museums (annual conference and webinars) • Georgia Society of CPA's Nonprofit Conference • Southeastern Accounting Show Showcase for the Georgia Society of CPAs (GSCPA) • Northeast Georgia Chapter of Certified Public Accountants • Panelist at Smith & Howard's Nonprofit Forums • Several boards of charitable organizations throughout Metro Atlanta • Alabama Federal Tax Clinic • Georgia Federal Tax Conference Marc recently participated on an expert panel which offered professional education to attorneys at the State Bar Association of Georgia on vexing issues for the Form 990. He co-authored and published "Uncertain Tax Positions – Applying ASC 740-10 to Reporting by Tax Exempt Organizations" that appeared in the November 2011 and April 2012 journal of Taxation of Exempts. He was a guest in 2013 on the nonprofit tax panel for the GSCPA episode on Atlanta Business Radio. Marc has served on the Campaign Manager's Leadership Committee with the United Way, serves annually as Chairman of Smith & Howard's United Way campaign and serves as Partner in charge of our community service committee. He is a Board and Audit, Finance and Compensation Committee member of Goodwill of North Georgia and Goodwill Industries of North Georgia and a member of the Tax Exempt/Governmental Entities (TE/GE) Gulf Coast Committee. Marc received undergraduate and master's degrees in Accounting from the University of Florida, and a MBA degree in Finance from Georgia State University.
