President Biography

Paula Mooney, 2007-2008 President

Paula Y. Mooney serves as the 2007-2008 president of the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants (GSCPA). Paula knew in high school that she wanted to be an accountant. Her cousin was a bookkeeper and she looked up to him and admired the work he did. Once she took an accounting course in high school her love for the profession was solidified. Upon entering college, she declared accounting as her major and never looked back. Today she knows she made the right decision for her career.

Paula graduated from the University of Georgia in 1983 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting, and in 1985 with a Master of Accountancy in auditing systems. Upon graduation, she joined the firm of Touche Ross & Co, currently known as Deloitte, as an auditor. She then transitioned into accounting education as a professor at Georgia Southern University. Although she enjoyed teaching, she was offered a position as the CFO of the Bulloch County Board of Education, and pursued the governmental side of accounting for a few years. Currently, she is in practice as a sole proprietor providing forensic accounting and software assistance to various clients.

Membership in the Georgia Society of CPAs has been influential to Paula's career. It has allowed her to stay connected and proactive at the state level. She has held a number of positions within the GSCPA, including treasurer, director, president of the Educational Foundation, and president of the Southeast Georgia Chapter. In addition to the Georgia Society of CPAs, she is an active member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. She is a graduate of the first GSCPA Leadership Academy class, and is very active in her community and her church. Paula resides in Statesboro, Georgia with Lowell, her husband of 20 years, and their three children, Jessica, Sarah, and Christopher, ages 16, 12, and 10.

As president of the Georgia Society of CPAs, Paula presides over approximately 11,000 members in public accounting, industry, government, and education. She is responsible for supervising all administrative activities of the organization, and is the final authority in interpreting policies of the Council and Board of Directors.
