About the Taxation Section

The Taxation Section, founded in 2002, is one of the GSCPA's fastest-growing and largest sections, and works to gather information pertaining to federal and state tax issues to keep the membership informed of new developments. The section provides numerous opportunities for networking, learning, and interaction, including the Atlanta and Savannah Tax Forums and regular meetings with the IRS and Georgia Department of Revenue. This section also provides an excellent opportunity by offering tours of both the IRS and Georgia Department of Revenue Processing Centers.  In addition, members are provided with a web site with news and content, a section directory, links to online tools and resources, and opportunities to communicate electronically.

This group's activities and programming are monitored and put into motion by the Taxation Section Leadership Team.  If you have any suggestions on programs or content, please feel free to contact one of the below individual's or the GSCPA Staff Liaison ( Jeff Wells , Sections Manager, 404-504-2942).

Taxation Section Receives Outstanding Section Award for 2009-2010

The Taxation Section recently received the GSCPA Outstanding Section Award at the 2010 Annual Convention and Leadership Meeting in Hilton Head Island. During the past year, the Taxation Section Leadership Team, under the leadership of John Masters, has become more active than in the past and has taken several steps to become more effective. A brief overview of the some of the accomplishments of the Taxation Section can be described in four main categories. First, they have taken action to strengthen the Taxation Section Leadership Team's ability to perform. Second, the Taxation Section has tried to engage more section members in Taxation Section activities. Third, they have taken more proactive positions with respect to Georgia Taxation issues with the Georgia Legislature and the Department of Revenue. Finally, they have maintained close contacts with the IRS liaisons and the Department of Revenue and continued to nurture our other legacy activities in general.

Quarterly IRS Liaison Meetings

The IRS/Georgia Practitioner Liaison Meetings are held quarterly at the GSCPA Training Center.  These meetings are organized and attended by various organizations including representatives from the Georgia Society of CPAs, the National Association of Tax Professionals, the Georgia State Bar, the Georgia Association of Public Accountants, and the Georgia Association of Enrolled Agents.  Also in attendance are individuals from different areas of the IRS depending on topics to be discussed.  The purpose of the Liaison Committee is to collect and disburse information to and from the IRS and then pass this information along by distributing the minutes to all practitioners who are members of the organizations thus reaching as many practitioners as possible.

Attendance at these meetings is not open to the general public and representatives of the IRS/Practitioners Liaison Committee must be appointed by an Organization that is already a member of the Liaison Committee. All Organizations are approved by a membership committee prior to becoming a member. Each Organization is then permitted to appoint two representatives and each representative must attend all meetings in order to remain active.

The Taxation Section offered it's first podcast of the Liaison meeting in January 2008. The archived version of the podcast is available for listening on this webpage below and is approximately 3 hours in length, just click the play button to begin.

If interested, you can also download the podcast and import into an MP3 player or listen to directly from your desktop.  To download, right click on the below link and click on "save as".

Annual IRS and Georgia DOR Surveys

The Taxation Section annually surveys the GSCPA membership on issues experienced in the previous tax year and solicits suggestions for the IRS and Georgia Department of Revenue going forward.  This survey serves as a centerpiece for their annual meetings with both these entities.  The emphasis of the survey and the meetings are for the GSCPA to work in cooperation with both the IRS and the state of Gerogia.

If you would like to participate in the planning and distribution of the surveys and the planning of the meetings, contact John Masters at jmasters@jmasters.com .
