Welcome (return to top)

Thanks to your hard work and dedication to the accounting profession, the number of university students enrolled in accounting programs has increased dramatically over the past five years! In hopes to continue this trend, the Georgia Society of CPAs is continuing our focus on educating students to the numerous career opportunities available in accounting. In today's economy, a degree in accounting has proven extremely valuable when graduating students enter the “real world.” One way to encourage students towards the profession is for colleges and universities to provide innovative and informative programs about the accounting profession. This will enable students to view accounting as something more than “counting beans” and show students the numerous opportunities that await them.

The Educational Foundation of the Georgia Society of CPAs is continuing an initiative at Georgia colleges and universities to fund programming that increases accounting awareness among collegiate students. Due to overwhelming response, the Cash for Professional Awareness (C.P.A.) Initiative is once again underway. The Educational Foundation of the GSCPA will provide dollar-for-dollar funding for approved accounting awareness programs. The goal of the program is to expand the ability of accounting programs to positively influence college students' perceptions about a career in accounting.

The Educational Foundation hopes that you find the C.P.A. Initiative useful in adding value to your existing accounting curriculums. If we invest in the C.P.A. Initiative now, we can expect a return of well-rounded, Certified Public Accountants in the future.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact GSCPA Associate Executive Director, Donna Heavener at 404-504-2943 or Student Outreach Committee Chair, Kel-Ann Eyler

Sincerely,

J. Lowell Mooney, Ph.D.

Program FAQs (return to top)

How do institutions participate in the Initiative?
Participation is quick and easy. Please review the above criteria and submit the enclosed application no later than October 17, 2008 in order to be approved for funding. Applications can also be found on the GSCPA web site.

What types of programs qualify for funding?
Programs that qualify will focus on educating students, business majors and others about the accounting profession. Examples of programs include:

•  Pizza Party to Showcase Accounting Professionals
•  Shadow-A-Professional Program
•  Trip to Local Accounting Firm
•  High Achieving Accounting Students Award Program

Is there a limitation on the amount of funding a school can receive?
Each submission will be evaluated and the determination of funding will be made by the Educational Foundation of the Georgia Society of CPAs. There are no preset maximums or minimums. Only one program will be approved per year per institution.

What if I want to host a program that does not coincide with the above criteria?
The Student Outreach Committee of the Educational Foundation has created a “Tier 2” program that assists in funding programs that do not correspond to the criteria for the C.P.A. Initiative Program but are worthwhile programs. Applications for Tier 2 funding will be distributed by request after all C.P.A. Initiative Programs have been approved for funding. For additional information, please contact Nealy Wheat or George Wentworth.
