The continual need for diverse accounting professionals is highlighted in a recent AICPA Trends in the Supply of Accounting Graduates and the Demand for Public Accounting Recruits Survey and is the driving force behind Minority Issues Task Force initiatives.

According to the 2009 edition of Trends in the Supply of Accounting Graduates and the Demand for Public Accounting Recruits Survey recently published by the AICPA, almost all sizes of firms expect hiring numbers to remain steady or increase in the coming year. Enrollment in accounting programs has increased 4.7% in the past year. This is a great sign of the need for accounting professionals, even in a struggling economy.

With the global economy and changing population demographics, CPAs from diverse backgrounds are even more in demand. A 2008 AICPA Survey indicates that enrollment of minority students has dropped from 32% to 30%.  Clearly the supply of new CPAs is not keeping pace with the demand. Consider the following statistics as well:

Statistics
  • Based on a 2008 AICPA Survey, the ethnicity of new hires is as follows: 10% Asian, 3% African-American, 3% Hispanic, 1% Native-American, and 2% Others.
  • Women are more than 23% of Partners across all firms, while minorities make up only 5% of all Partners, according to the same 2008 AICPA Survey.
  • Hiring had been strong but tailed off as the economy worsened. The good news is that hiring has slowly started to increase. Overall, as per the 2009 AICPA Survey, there was not much change in trends from the 2008 survey.
